![]() Establishing an efficient route for this can allow you to ferry many Lava Buckets into your base on the safe side of your Nether Portal. As such, one of the quickest methods of getting a lot of lava is to bring a bunch of empty Buckets into the Nether, find the closest lava lake, and scoop up a bunch of the orange resource. Conversely, the Nether is full of lava–there are literal lakes of the stuff. The overworld does have lava here are there, though it is often found deep underground. Therefore, you will ironically need to make a Nether Portal out of a bunch of Obsidian if you want the best Obsidian farming method. Out of these 2 dimensions, the Nether is the best place to gather Obsidian-making resources. There are other ways that you can get Obsidian without mining it, however, the rest will all take you into the Nether or the End. In each of such Chests, you have a 25.6% chance to find 3 to 7 Obsidian blocks. You have a small chance of finding Obsidian in the Weaponsmith’s Chests of Villages. ![]() Other Ways to Get Obsidian Without Mining As such, you can make a Nether Portal with only 10 Obsidian. A Nether Portal needs to be 4 blocks long and 5 blocks high, however, you don’t need to have the corners. Be sure to contain each source block of lava safely in Cobblestone before trying to pour flowing water over it. You just have to create each block with the steps mentioned above. If you don’t have a Diamond or Netherite Pickaxe and still want to use Obsidian to make a Nether Portal, you can. Making a Nether Portal With Lava and Water Mine your Obsidian with a Diamond or Netherite Pickaxe to collect it.After the flowing water turns the lava source blocks into Obsidian, collect the water source block in your Bucket.Empty a Water Bucket nearby, but not on top of any lava source blocks.Similarly, flowing water that touches flowing lava will also turn it into Cobblestone. A source block of water dumped onto a source block of lava will make Cobblestone. Just keep in mind that you need to get flowing water to cover a source lava block to turn it into Obsidian. If you try to mine Obsidian Blocks with any other kind of Pickaxe, you can still break it, but it won’t drop itself as an item. Just don’t forget that you can only collect Obsidian with a Diamond or Netherite Pickaxe. Lastly, you’ll need a Water Bucket to cool the lava into Obsidian. This is the type of lava that you can scoop up with a Bucket, as opposed to flowing lava, which you can’t collect with a Bucket. However, the most important component for making Obsidian blocks is a lava source block. 2 Buckets should do for the simplest method. ![]() I was also still able to travel to that nether portal from the original overworld portal.Firstly, you will need a Bucket–ideally more than 1 if you want to be as efficient as possible. I let the third portal remain, and after that I was able to port back and forth between that portal and the one in the nether. The third one was created at -790/79/689. I didn't record the locations of the first two portals created by the game when I came back to the overworld. This isn't at one-eighth of the coordinates of my overworld portal, as it should have been. The corresponding nether portal created by my traveling through my overworld portal was created at -100/85/87. The overworld portal I created was at -933/80/631 (just outside the mansion). This is probably related to the bug in MC-242348. The first two times a new portal was created, it was created at the tops of very tall trees. The new overworld portal that generated generated in a different place each time. So, this process allows a player to generate as much obsidian as desired, with no downside other than the time to break the blocks. Sure enough, I could get another 14 obsidian. Lo and behold, the game created yet another nether portal in the overworld. Once the generator starts running, you can leave it be until the chests fill up. Then I went back to the portal I originally created and went through again, and then back to the overworld. Obsidian farms are good, but obsidian generators make the drenching process automated. So, I broke all the obsidian (collecting 14 obsidian in the process). I thought, perhaps if I get rid of this new portal in the overworld, and go back to the one I created and repeat the journey to the nether and back again, I can get it to work properly. However, what wasn't mentioned is what I did next. Then I went back through the new nether portal in the nether, and ended up several hundred blocks from the portal I created earlier. I went to the nether through it and made a trek to my original nether base. I created a nether portal in the overworld several hundred blocks from my base. This is a follow-on ticket, showing how this "working as intended" grants players the ability to create infinite obsidian very quickly, which, in my view, is a serious exploit. This is related to MC-113314, which was "resolved" as "working as intended".
